Sensitizing & training children in schools on how to protect the environment
Summary

This project is intended to create awareness within communities about the need for environmental conservation and protection. Children at schools will be involved and mainly targeted in our conservation and protection campaigns for they represent our future and the existence of these trees and a safe conserved environment depends on them. We will encourage planting of fruit trees because they will not only play an environment role but also serve the purpose of providing fruits for the school community which are a vital source of vitamins for the children.

Under this project, we shall give fruit tree seedlings to different schools for planting with the aim of promoting environmental conservation and protection. The world today is faced with a problem of climatic change which has in the recent times resulted into longer droughts and a high increase of carbon dioxide gases in the atmosphere. Trees vegetation that would have helped in removing these dangerous toxic gases are being cut for human use. Most schools in Uganda depend on wood as a major source of fuel while others use charcoal produced from cut down burnt trees. As a result of population increase, there has been a growth in the number of schools and students which has resulted into massive cutting of trees to be used as fuel in cooking. Sighting an example of most rural schools, it’s a school requirement for every student to bring a bunch of wood every term to assist the school reduce on the expenditures made on the purchase of wood. Therefore, the commercial use of these trees within communities today has accelerated the rate at which deforestation is taking place. This project will encourage the planting of more trees within communities as well as sensitizing many about the need for environmental protection and conservation. The project will seek to plant over 1,000,000 trees with emphasis on fruit trees in schools within Uganda.

Challenge

The rate at which trees are cut down for commercial is increasingly growing. Communities like school use a lot of cut down trees as a source of fuel for mainly cooking. This is because of their limited knowledge of the importance of trees in the ecosystem. Globally the increased loss of tree loss is a leading cause of climate change today. Over the years Uganda has been faced with natural catastrophes such as floods, drought and famine brought about by deforestation.

More still fruit trees which are a valuable source of vitamins for families within communities are being cut down for money hence creating more health related problems. In order for us to curb down the problem of increased tree cover loss and its associated health and environmental problems, there is need for us to sensitize our communities about the importance of trees, their conservation, protection and the need for planting more starting with the young generation within school.

Solution

The project will embark on encouraging the planting of trees within schools as well as sensitizing them on the importance of these trees. Environmental conservation methods and protection practices will be taught in schools to students. In order for us to articulate the importance of these trees in the ecosystem and the community we are to focus on planting fruit trees which shall also be a source of the much needed vitamins for the good health of the entire community. A total number of up to 1,000,000 trees shall be planted in school communities within a span of 5 years in which this project shall run. More awareness about the importance of these trees will be carried out through environmental education and formulation of environmental protection clubs at school.

Long-Term Impact

This project in the long run will serve to address the global effort of reducing global warming and climatic change.

The project will help breed a new generation of responsible citizens which are the young people in schools who will be much responsible and handle tree with respect having been educated on their value to the community and the ecosystem at large.

We believe that this project will be a role model project that will open the eyes of not only the people within our community but also the eyes of our leaders and the entire civil society about the need for environmental conservation and protection especially in regard to tree planting.
