Report on Nursery Bed Project Activity, May 2024

Abstract

Central to the Green Community Program is our dedicated tree planting initiative, which aims to rejuvenate the environment while nurturing a greener future for our communities. We understand that trees are not only vital for the health of our ecosystem but also play a pivotal role in enhancing the nutritional well-being of our community members.

Introduction

African Soul Initiative embarked on a significant endeavor to initiate the Nursery Bed Project as part of the Green Community Program. This project aims to expand the nursery bed for fruit tree seedlings, contributing to environmental conservation and community sustainability efforts in communities.

Goal

The goal of the Nursery Bed Project is to produce and distribute over 5000 fruit tree seedlings within the community by early 2025, thereby promoting biodiversity, food security, and environmental resilience.

Objectives

  1. Collect and preserve seeds of various fruit tree species from the community.
  2. Establish a nursery bed for the propagation of fruit tree seedlings.
  3. Distribute the seedlings to beneficiaries for planting in their respective areas.
  4. Raise awareness about the importance of fruit tree planting and environmental conservation.

Beneficiaries:

The primary beneficiaries of this project are the communities within Wakiso and beyond, who will receive fruit tree seedlings for planting on their land. Additionally, the broader ecosystem and future generations will benefit from the environmental conservation efforts facilitated by this initiative.

Activities:

  • Collection and preservation of over 5000 fruit tree seeds from the community (April 20th to May 17th, 2024).
  • Procurement of necessary supplies including seeds, planting polythene bags, and transportation arrangements (operating on a budget of UGX 360,000).
  • Delivery of supplies to the Nursery Bed Project manager in Kalungu on May 18th, 2024.
  • Preparation of garden beds and commencement of planting activities under the supervision of Mr. Muyingo John Bosco.

Outcome:

The outcome of this activity was the successful delivery of essential supplies to kick start the Nursery Bed Project. Despite challenges such as seed selection, preservation, and transportation costs, significant progress was made towards achieving the project goals. Gardens have been prepared, and planting has commenced, laying the foundation for the production of fruit tree seedlings.

Source of Funding:

Funding for this activity was generously provided by members of African Soul Initiative, totaling UGX 600,000. These contributions facilitated the procurement of seeds, planting materials, and transportation, enabling the project to move forward.

Challenges:

  • Difficulty in selecting and preserving high-quality seeds for planting.
  • Scarcity of fruits due to off-season conditions, hindering seed collection efforts.
  • High transportation costs, particularly for seeds transported to the distant nursery bed site.
  • More funds are required for the success and continuity of this effort.

Long-Term Impact:

The Nursery Bed Project holds the potential for significant long-term impact, including:

  • Increased fruit tree biodiversity and food security within the community.
  • Improved environmental resilience and ecosystem health through tree planting initiatives.
  • Enhanced community engagement and empowerment in environmental conservation efforts.

Recommendation & Way Forward:

Moving forward, it is recommended to:

  • Continue seed collection efforts, focusing on obtaining a diverse range of fruit tree species.
  • Explore strategies to mitigate transportation costs, such as establishing local seed collection points.
  • Strengthen community engagement and participation through awareness-raising activities and capacity-building initiatives.
  • Monitor and evaluate the progress of the Nursery Bed Project, adjusting strategies as needed to ensure its success and sustainability.

Conclusion:

The Nursery Bed Project holds immense promise for fostering environmental stewardship and sustainable development within the community, and with continued dedication and support, its impact will be felt for years to come.
